Who is the learner?

“Just as scientist must unlearn much of what they believe if they wish to master a new paradigm, so, too, ordinary readers have to be able to expunge misleading conceptions and construct new knowledge, if they are able to appreciate a hitherto unfamiliar concept.”

I feel that being in school this long has a huge impact on me to grasp onto concepts and learning about early childhood education.  Now what will happen when I have completed my schooling?  Will my disciplined mind to learn, crack?  How will I stay focused on continuing to learn all that I can? 
To care for children, and to let alone research children daily has also an impact on us as educators to continue to learn and grasp onto the updated researches about early development.  So how do we stay up to date?  How do we keep our minds open for new information? 

My site just changed the way we sanitize and disinfect.  This change alone, though it is so minor, changes the way I clean the classroom, the way that I find time to create sanitizing solutions, how am I going to fit this change into my schedule with the children?  What a minor change, but it can definitely have a huge impact.  So how will  you use new information to benefit your classroom and your teaching with the children? 


How will you make your learning visible?  I never thought of this question pertaining to me.  But as I learned in this reading, not only is the children the learners, but I am too.  So how do I make my own learning visible?  How would you make your learning visible?

  1. Being in this field, isn't it a must to stay up to date on information? As an educator, or learning to be an educator, aren't we always learning? Isn't it important to continue with our professional developments? We are provided with so many opportunities to continue to learn new things through different classes, workshops, seminars, etc.. How do we take advantage of some of these opportunities when they are during our working hours? Why don't they schedule these classes on weekends or in the evening when most of us are not working?

  2. It is so important for us even as adults to never stop learning! Once we do that, its like we are saying we have learned all there is to learn in the world, or at least the important stuff! But that is obviously not true so it is important for us to have a desire to continue learning! But how do we get this desire? Well, I understand I will never know everything there is to know in the world, so i try to find the things that interest me most, that things that I am really passionate about and then dig deeper to know as much as I can about it! I can never know everything, so trying to would just be an epic fail. But my interests grow and change as I get older, and things that once interested me I am no longer as passionate about. I still retain the stuff I learned in that area, but I am ready to move onto something else that maybe pertains more to me at this place in my life right now! Its great to have many different interests in a life time because that keeps us learning many different things about a variety of topics! Sometimes I hear a fact about something, & I wonder if its true. When I get the chance, I look it up, and if it interests me and I want to know even more, I will search for a book on it or someway that I can learn more. The more that I am exposed to different people from different places the more I want to learn about them and where they came from. This makes me curious about that culture or environment and I begin to ask questions and figure out answers. If we are never exposed to different people, places and things, we will never be inspired to wonder or ask questions about those things! The best way to encourage continuous learning is to expose yourself to BRAND NEW things!!! This makes you curious and want to find answers to your questions! Don't stay in a "box" of comfort....branch our....explore....ask questions!!!! :)

    You share an interesting example in how your site changed the cleaning process. How often are housekeeping ideas embraced and changed with ease -- yet critical perspectives like making learning visible is something considered but never fully realized? How might documentation become part of center? Is it related to how the child is viewed? If a center has the view of the child as incapable, how might a center change with the view of the child as capable? Would this influence the use of documentation? Or how documentation becomes how teachers understand and seriously consider and construct teacher response?

  4. How important do you feel continuing education have? Is it necessary to keep learning new and different approaches and strategies? I think that as society changes so do the people, to help cope with this change I feel that it is very important for teachers to continue learning and evolving with society.

  5. Keeping an open mind to learning is so important in this field. As teachers we much always have open minds to the way children learn and be willing to change depending on the group of children we have. If you change children every year, your classroom must change to accommodate and individualize for the children in our care. How do we keep an open mind for learning even as we finish up on our degrees? What does our community offer to help us stay refreshed and up to date on the new things happening in our field? Have you had the opportunity to attend any conferences and if so how can they help us remember to "keep learning"?
